AI summary
AEO and GEO both aim to get your content into AI-generated answers, but they take different approaches. Compare what each strategy targets, how content should be structured, and how success is measured.
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) and Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) are both strategies that help your content get chosen for direct responses to user queries. The underlying goal is the same: earn a place in the answer, not just a spot on the results page.
AEO, per its name, grew out of Featured Snippets, People Also Ask boxes, and voice assistants. It has come to cover AI responses in search engines, like Google's AI Overviews or Bing's Copilot.
GEO is more commonly used for optimization across generative AI experiences, including AI answers within search engines and standalone tools such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Claude.
You may see the overlap and treat the two terms as the same or draw a soft distinction in emphasis. Use GEO when the conversation is about visibility across generative AI systems, and AEO when the focus is on structuring content to answer specific queries directly.
AEO vs. GEO tactics
Tactic | AEO | GEO |
Primary target | Search answer boxes, voice assistants, and AI Overviews | Generative AI tools and AI-powered search experiences |
Content structure | Direct Q&A format, answer near the top | Well-organized sections a model can extract and synthesize |
Sourcing and citations | Helpful; clear, consistent entity naming strengthen trust signals | Critical; models favor content with clear, checkable sources |
Entity clarity | Critical; models need to resolve who/what you're talking about | Critical; consistent naming helps identify brands and products |
Success metric | Answer or snippet visibility | Citation or brand mention in AI-generated answers |
Content length | Concise answers, often under 50 words | Can be longer if well-structured for extraction |
